There are many situations where it is natural, convenient or necessary to explore infinite groups via their finite-dimensional representations or their actions on finite objects. How much understanding can one gain about an infinite group in this way? Sometimes little, sometimes a lot.
Do there exist algorithms that decide what the finite images of a group are?
Which groups are completely determined by their finite images?
I shall sketch some of the rich history of these problems and explain how input from geometry and low-dimensional topology has transformed the subject in recent years.

Martin Bridson es un matemático inglés, y actualmente Whitehead Professor de matemáticas puras en  Oxford, y director del insituto Clay de matemáticas. Destaca por sus trabajos y contribuciones a la teoría geométrica de grupos. Destaca por sus trabajos relacionando propiedades geométricas y algorítmicas de los grupos. Su monografía "Metric spaces of non-positive curvature" ha contribuido a establecer la rama de la teoría geométrica de grupos. Doctorado en 1991 en Cornell, ha trabajado en en Princeton, la Universidad de Ginebra y el Imperial  College de Londres antes de establecerse en Oxford. Entre sus multiples reconocimientos destaca el premio Whitehead Prize de la LMS (1999), el  premio Royal   Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2012), haber sido conferenciante invitado del ICM 2006 en Madrid, fellow de la AMS desde 2015 y desde 2016 Fellow de la Royal Society.
